I have compiled a short suggested reading list for those who are interest in learning more about East Asian Medicine, Philosophy, Daoism, and Neigong (internal cultivation practices).
The Xuanmen Zaowan Tan Gongke Jing 玄門早晚壇功課經, recited at the altar at every Quanzhen Daoist Temple. Contains prayers of purification, hagiographies of deities, prayers of commitment, cosmology, meditation, theory and more. A key text for those seeking to understand Daoist doctrine and practice as it is experienced in daily life at the temples. This scriptures is part of the four the main corpus of liturgical texts common to most Quanzhen Longmen Daoist temples.
Daoist monk Cheng Xuanying in the 7th century CE. This commentary is a quintessential text of Tang dynasty Daoist philosophy and of Chongxuanxue or Twofold Mystery teachings. Cheng Xuanying proposes a reading of the ancient Daode jing that aligns the text with Daoist practices and beliefs and integrates Buddhist concepts and techniques into the exegesis of the Daode jing.
The Sanguan Jing 三官經/The Scripture of the Thee Officials (or The Profound Scripture of the Upmost Three Officials Who Bestow Blessings, Pardon Sins, Dispel Calamities, Avert Disasters, Prolong Life, and Secure Destiny) focuses on one’s activities, & speaks directly to the ramifications and repercussions of these actions, in outlining the basic nature of cause & effect from a from a Daoist doctrinal perspective. This is the 3rd scripture in the liturgical texts common to Quanzhen Longmen Daoist temples & is recited daily at noon (11-1 hour).
